Friday 060

Hey Guys!
Let's kick Friday Music off with new music from an artist who is one of those "I've been around for years over night successes." Two tunes from Jarekus Singleton, the title track from his first CD titled I Refuse To Lose and Hero. Next is a 19 year old artist that my daughter Oona rather likes and I'm still trying to figure out where and what is his musical groove, but I find him rather interesting. King Krule with Rock Bottom. Kickin' back up a little with Gary Clark Jr. tearing it up with Bright Lights. Next is Curtis Mayfiend who would have been 72 on June 3rd. with a fine live rendition of Freddie's Dead. Last but certainly not least is an artist I totally dig. Considered by many including Van Morrison as the best r&b artist from England. We started with two cuts so let's finish with two by James Hunter, First a sweet live version of Don't Do Me No Favors followed by Carina which has a real throw back feel with a video with great images.
Have a great Spring Friday and as always be kind, even when it's hard to do it, be kind........

Sooo, with your indulgence and hopefully your enjoyment I thought I'd do a little look back at some of my favorite sends to you all the last 6 months or sooo. Tough choice. Turns out I liked a lot of tunes, but I cut it down to these.
First up a group who I continue to deepen my appreciation and enjoyment. Cake with Long Time.Next, The Decemberists with Perfect Crime. Here's a live version of Dawes Just My Luck. How's about Eli "Paperboy" Reed with WooHoo! Which takes me to Franz Ferdinand with Right Action. Now for a couple pieces that dig down to that place that just feels weirdly good for the soul. Here's Jolie Holland and Alley Flowers, followed by James Blake with The Wilhelm Scream. A little road trip music by Fort Knox Five with Blowing Up The Barrio. Here are a couple that many of you positively commented on when I sent them out to you. Lake Street Dive with Second Hand News and JD McPherson with Your Love. How about Lucius with a live version of Go Home. Let these ladies keep singing. Here's St Vincent with Huey Newton. This is cut your haven't heard from me, but from a favorite album Where Does This Door Go and favorite artist Mayer Hawthorn with Innocent. Here are The Strokes and The Mighty Stef with Heart In A Cage and If You Can't Give Me Everything. Finally Jack White with High Ball Stepper. To quote Brother MIke of whom I love dearly, "Turn It Up!"
Hope you enjoyed the look back and as always have a great Friday and show someone your sweet side!

Mornin' All:
This is a quick re due, My saved draft for today seems to have become unsaved! Today we have some newly released music leading into some very old music.
The Black Keys released Turn Blue this week. I recently listened to interview of the boys from Akron, Patrick Carney & Dan Auerback by David Dye on World Cafe and Dan eluded to the music lineup on their new CD like a baseball lineup. So I give you the lead off hitter and the cleanup from Turn Blue. Here are Weight Of Love and Fever.
Dan Auerback has also produced several new CD for Ray LaMontagne and Lana Del Rey. So here are Super Nova from Ray and From Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolance, here's Fake Diamonds. Next up is one of the key musical influences on The Black Keys. Lightin' Hopkins. This is a tune they love. Here's a live rendition of Mojo Hand. Finally a song that my brother Mike turned me on to too many years ago to feel good about the massive turning of time. But here's Lightin' Hopkins & Sunny Terry with Conversation Blues. Sunny Terry had a huge influence on me playing the blues harp. Have a happy and healthy Friday filled with music!

Friday 057

So last Friday while I was out and about I heard an interview of David Crosby on World Cafe where he talked in depth about his life, his music and his multiple arrests and troubles with the police etc. he endured with great song writing & some of the most beautiful and haunting harmonies ever conceived. From his heart, to his mouth. Man survived alcohol and drug addition and a kidney transplant and is still making great music. Now with his son, James Raymond, who David says is a better musician and artist then him.
They played several cuts live from his new CD and they were wonderful! BTW I believe he will be 73 in August and still playing great music. So I thought I'd put one of his new songs on for today, but as I went back and listened to some of his older music I was reminded of his artistic brilliance. So today it will all be the music of David Crosby.
Let's start off with something from The Byrds, (a band he was kicked out of) with a song titled Everybody's Been Burned. Next is the very beautiful Guinevere from Crosby Stills & Nash and from CSNY Deja Vu. Two from his first solo album, which is now being hailed as a major piece of work, 43 years after it's release. Titled If I Could Only Remember My Name. He says that this cut a favorite of his from the album. I'd Swear Someone Was Here. The next is a favorite of mine titled Orleans. Finally from his new CD Croz is What's Broken, featuring Mark Knopfler and he son James. Have a sweet sunny Friday. Remind someone in your life that you love them....

Mornin":
Here we go with our first offering of this fine first Friday of the month. Johnnyswin. A very handsome young married couple with a ton of talent. BTW the young woman is the daughter of Donna Summers and the name of the group comes from a goldfish of hers that dies one day and she urged him back to life by saying Johnny Swim! Here is a live acoustic renditions of their tune Diamonds. Next a cut from Patti Griffin Let Him Fly. From the oddly interesting movie Inside Llewyn Davis is Oscar Issac singing Hang Me, Oh Hang Me.I sent you a cut of this next artist a month or so ago, St. Vincent. Here she is with David Byrne doing the song Who. Finally new music from G Love & Special Sauce with Merry Clayton recently seen in 20 Feet From Stardom. They're doing One Night Romance. Have a great Friday!

Spring has sprung, why doesn't my heart go dancing"
Great line from a love song but I can't seem to find it. BUT I have happily been helped look at or find new and great exiting music from several of you. Love when that happens! Keep the ideas and suggestions coming. I try to do my best to keep it fresh, eclectic and fun but you all have great taste soooo share! Although I just looked out my window and after an 81 degree day yesterday it's snowing right now! REALLY!!!
Here is some relatively new music I've discovered. REALLY like the first artist. A young rockabilly artist named JD McPherson. Two pieces from him today. First from his album Sighs &Signifies is Signs & Signifies.
Next is Your Love. The CD cut is excellent but I thought you might like to see & hear him live. Next piece is titled Alley Flowers. By Jolie Holland. This piece really gets to me and it's one of those likes that I can't really tell you why it moves me. Perhaps some ancient ancestral connect to Application Irish music. Hope you like it. Finally a new piece and an old one. They come from a fellow Friday music friend Brendan McCabe who sent me these two piece. The first is a new group to me named The Black Angels. The song is Young Men Dead. As I told Brendan, the lead singer reminds me wee bit of Neil Young. Finally he reminded me of a Stones song that I forgot how really fine it was. Here from the Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers album is Midnight Mile. As always have a wondrous Friday! And Happy Easter!

Top Of The Morning:
Lets start off with a Decemberist tune that I really like, titles Perfect Crime. We now move to a live version of Ya Hey by Vampire Weekend. This next cut comes to us by way of Jake Publicover. Another group I really like, Fleet Foxes with Blue Ridge Mountains. Very cool video. Also very cool is the one shot video of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros with If I Were Free. From Iron & Wine the acoustic, solo first time performance of this beautiful song. Flightless Bird American Mouth. Next because if you watch youtube, and who doesn't.This group is advertised all over the place this past week and I heard an interview with them last week so lets give em a listen. Future Islands and Waiting On You. Finally a personal favorite of mine and many of you on Friday Music. Delbert McClinton who had emergency By Pass surgery last Sunday. He's doing fine but I thought I end with one of the most beautiful and sad love songs ever written. You Were Never Mine.
Everyone have a Grand Friday!!!

Top of The Mornin' All!
Gonna start off old school with the great voice of Tony Joe White singing Polk Sally Annie. Love Gary Clark Jr. Truly a great talent. Boy can sing and flat out play the guitar! Here he is with Please Come Home. Next is an artist we haven't heard from in quite some time. Ryan Shaw sounding like Sam Cook reincarnate, but probably he's all of 25 yrs old right now. Here he is with The Sweetest Thing. I'm also going back to Don Was for another eclectic piece from Was Not Was. Here's I Feel Better Than James Brown. Again a discovery of Don Was, Sweet Pea Atkinson singing with The Boneshakers with Lets Straighten It Out. Next is a live performance by Robert Plant & The Band of Joy with Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down. Nothing like a live performance! From Tom Waits latest offering, BTW you just can't go wrong with Tom. So here is Chocolate Jesus and Come On Up To The House. Finally because last Tuesday would have been Marvin Gaye's 75 birthday if his father hadn't shot him to death. Here's a great live rendition of Distant Lover. An FYI for all you. Do yourself a favor and check out this years Academy Award Documentary titles 20 Feet From Stardom. It focuses on the lives and careers of background singers. Great movie! Goes very well with Standing In The Shadow Of Motown.Have a musical Friday! , Sing in the car, hum standing in line and let your heart sing!

Howdy My Fellow Music Lovers:
Today a little bit a new and a wee bit of old. First up are a group of fellow musicians from The New England Conservatory of Music who call themselves Lake Street Dive. I really like them! Two tunes in the raw by them. Next is an artist I learned about from listening to David Dye and World Cafe. This very articulate and ingaging young woman was being interviewed and playing live when she told the story of this cut which came about after she took some Ambient to sleep. She has been on tour with David Byrne of late .Bring on the Ambient! Next we go back to weeks just before the bombing of Pearl Harbor with a short film featuring The Glen Gray Casa Loma Orchestra. Love the look, the set and the clothing. From St. Louis, sounding very old and yet not, here is Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three. Here's a couple of great old jazz artist, Sidney Bechet & Jonah Jones with Lonesome Road. Finally we'll land on the great English pianist and singer Liane Carroll, who does the best rendition of Picture In A Frame by Tom Waits I've ever heard and that I have sent out to you all, but today we end with her and Ian Shaw with their rendition of You've Got A Friend. Welcome aboard Kitty a fellow Florida State Graduate that Brother Chuck reconnected me last week and Mark Wojnowski Director of Undergraduate Admissions that I met last night at a function that I and my darlin' girl Honora attended because it would seem Honora is destine to be a Niagara Purple Eagle! Oh yes, and my daughter Oona begins with us today.Welacme aboard you three! Have a great Friday my Friends!

Friday 050

Mornin:
As many of you know I have a deep love for the blue harp. I believe I can hold my own playing it. So today here are just a few players that trip my trigger. John Hammond is among them and I believe he is responsible for me deciding that I HAD to really learn to play. So I thought I'd thrown down with some of my favorite Mississippi Saxophone players for today's Friday Music. My departed Brother Pat once introduced me as Blyndboy Rubinstein while he was playing a gig and I had just gotten off a plane from LA. He said "we have a special guest tonight. Blyndboy Rubinstein. He ain't blind, he ain't Jewish but he can blow harp." Thanks Brother. So can all these players! Enjoy and welcome to Spring!

Enjoy!

Friday 045

So 50 years ago to the day, this Sunday, the musical landscape changed forever with this little ditty by a four piece combo from Liverpool England called The Beatles, when the did this performance on The Ed Sullivan Show. It led to what we all know as The British Invasion with bands like The Dave Clark Five, Herman's Hermits, Chad & Jeremy Donovan and on and on. Which let to groups like these. Here are a few favorites on mine. May be a few of your in there too. Let the good times roll!! By the bye, will this Winter never end! Enjoy the tunes!

Mornin' Music Mavens:
Well, we here in the northeastern part of America have been getting our asses kicked by an Arctic Winter unlike any we've had in years! So lets warm it up with wee bit of Summer by starting off with the newest music from The Beach Boys. Year 50 years later they're still putting out fine harmonies and for those of us with a few miles on us, a melancholy song from their latest effort, That's Why God Made The Radio, song titled Summers Gone. From a warmer part of America, LA and Dawes with a live version of Someone Will. Here's a group I really like, Lucius. Two young women, both graduates of The Berkeley School of Music, with another live rendition of their composition titled Go Home. Check out the girls outfits. They always dress exactly alike. The official video of this tune is pretty interesting. Check it out. Their musical takes trip my trigger! This one warms me up too, Wilco doing True Love Will Find You I The End. A rather interesting electro/funk band out of DC named Fort Know Five with Shift. Finally, lets go back a few years and warm it up with Kid Creole And The Coconuts doing MuChaChaCha. Appears today is a heatwave! going to 29 degrees! Sooo warm thoughts to you all on a cold Winter Friday in upstate NY!

Friday 043

Guys:
I've had this weird thing happening the last few months where finding you all great music was a struggle. Not sure why, but the flood gates have opened and I have a ton of great music I want to share! Been re-listening to my own stuff and have been hearing or being turned on to some amazing stuff. Sooo I'm not sure where to start, so let me just pick a few pieces I've been digging on this week. First up is a group I sent you months ago and I really like them. Here's Cake with Long Time. I have really been enjoying Ricki Lee Jones of late so when I was driving home last night and a dj who does a show on PBS WRUR here in Rochester called Night Train played this cut I was stunned. Wasn't even sure who it was, but it sure sounded like Ricki so I went to You Tube and ran it down and low and behold it was Ricki singing Only Love Can Break Your Heart. Sweet take on a great song! Next is a young dude who kicks it pretty good. Eli Paperboy Reed with WooHoo. Enough said.... Another fine young funkster is Nick Waterhouse. I could play anything of his and my ears would be happy! So here's I Can Only Give You Everything. Or Don Was's discovery, Sweet Pea Atkinson. Did a lot of great songs with Was Not Was, but here he is with The Boneshakers singing Cold Sweat. Finally here's an artist that my oldest Nora is so taken with that she is going up to Toranto in April to see him. John Newman live on Later With Jool's Holland singing Love Me Again. Have a musical Friday! Last minute add on This band is playing here in Rochester at Sticky Lips tomorrow night. Enjoy!!!

Friday 042

Hey Folks!
I think I have three fun, fine pieces of music for you this January Friday. Two were used in mediocre films, Six Days And Seven Nights and Dusk Till Dawn and the third is from a pretty fine album of the great Dr. John. First up is Taj Mahal with The Hula Blues Band. Love the soprano sax riffs. Our second selection is The Blasters doing Dark Night. Flat out down and dirty. Finally The Doctor from 1974's Desitively Bonnaroo lp doing Everybody Wanna Get Rich Rite Away. Enjoy!

Friday 041

Well we lost one of the iconic singers from this or any generation. Don Everly. This song was on the flip side of one of their smash hits, Wake Up Little Suzy. The song is Bird Dog. Rather like this one too. Cathy's Clown. Thanks for the great music and memories. Here's a cut of Dave Edmond's with the raw sound of a garage band. Rockpile doing You Ain't Nothin' But Fine. This songs kicks ass! Finally for any of you that are Tower Of Power fans, here's a cut from their new lead singer Ray Greene who hit stage for the first time with TOP this last New Years Eve. From a solo cd of his, here's Tonight. Have a great Friday!
